December 2020 update

Father Christmas and the Lion delivered gifts to members of the Westgate Group on Monday 7th December. As we were unable to treat the Westgate Group members and families/carers to the customary Christmas party, together with an early visit by Father Christmas to hand out Christmas presents, we didn't want the members to miss out so organised a tour round their homes for Father Christmas to deliver the gifts in person, along with some presents for their parents/carers, donated by the Westgate Group team. Hardly had Father Christmas sped off back to the North Pole than we received the following message: "I’ve already had positive feedback .... so sounds like you got things just right! Thank you and all the Lions for your tireless support for Westgate Group. Let’s hope that next Christmas, we’ll be back to normal again!"

September 2020 Update
Did you know that around 40% of all food produced is wasted. This equates to around 1.3 billion tonnes.  Almost 50% of the food wasted in the UK comes from our own homes.
This is estimated to cost the average household £470 per year, rising to £700 per year
for a family with children.

The Lions of the British Isles are committed to help tackle this waste. As a result they have formed the Lions Gleaning Hub. This group works with farms to help remove the unpicked produce from the fields and then forward it to Food Banks and other outlets that can use what would otherwise be waste.

Southwell & District Lions Club have teamed up with Starkey’s Fruit Farm to collect fruit that would otherwise go to waste and other the next 2 days hope to collect up to 5 tonnes of pears and apples which will then be collected by FareShare and distributed to food banks throughout the UK. Thanks must also go to the other Lions Clubs that have helped us collect the fruit.

Picture
UPdate:  We managed to finish the Gleaning in 2 days and we estimate that we collected over 3 tonnes of fruit which was picked up by FairShare and we await the final weigh in.  Finally, a huge thank you to all that helped collect the fruit and to our friends from the other Lions Clubs who joined us over the 2days.

Certain areas frequented by the younger members of our community were particularly affected by litter, a sad indictment.

Our Town Planters get a make-over!

You'll see our planters on all the roads leading into Southwell, adding a colourful welcome to the town signs.   The lads have been out over the Bank Holiday weekend giving them their summer makeover. They'll take a little while to bed in but then be a glorious profusion of colour throughout the summer as teams of Lions ensure they are kept watered and looking their best for the town. Tools for Self Reliance

In February we presented a cheque for £3,000 to this group which represented the proceeds from our 2017 Carols for Everyone concert.. The money will go towards a vocational training project for 40 young people in Zambia.
This will be a life changing opportunity for the recipients. Southwell has a very strong and active Tools for Self Reliance group, collecting, restoring and shipping tools to Africa.

Here are Lions Mark Bramble & Barry Erlston presenting the cheque, with Lion Brian Dewing, (far right) & Lion Verdun Webley (far left) both of whom are also members of the Tools for Self Reliance Group, looking on.
