July - rain fails to stop play at the President's BBQ

The President's BBQ is an annual fixture in the Lions calendar, the final responsibility of the outgoing President. This year, it was the turn of Alastair Murray, who, mindful of storm warnings and the likelihood of being rained off in his garden, wisely relocated the BBQ to Southwell Scouts' Headquarters by the Memorial Park. And quite right too, as the high winds would have wreaked havoc, blowing food, chairs and gazebos away, as well as with our hairdos.

Chef for the day was Pavel Honcharenko, one of our Ukrainian friends, who served up mouth-watering chicken wings, sausages and pork and chicken kebabs on skewers, all of which was accompanied by a range of salads supplied by members. The meal was finished off with a plentiful supply of puddings, including pavlovas, cheesecakes, pavlovas, fruit salads, eclairs, pavlovas and, did I mention, pavlovas.

Immediate Past President Alastair Murray thanked Club members for their support over the last year and welcomed new President Ian Gillings, who said how much he is looking forward to the year ahead. For some reason, Alastair's hat was the subject of some discussion, which is probably why he looks so downcast in the middle photo!

June - Christening the new BBQ at The Reindeer

Tuesday, 20th June started out rain-soaked. The rain continued all morning and into the afternoon. And even when it stopped raining, the clouds looked ominously dark. But that wasn't enough to prevent 30-odd Lions and partners from descending on the Reindeer Inn, where landlord and great friend of the Lions, Rama, was christening his new BBQ, a gift from the Lions in grateful recognition of everything he does for us.

We were also joined by Dr Laurence Mugisha from Central Kampala Lions, Uganda, who is visiting Nottingham with a group of students from his university. Laurence was a very welcome guest and we hope he enjoyed meeting all of us as much as we enjoyed meeting him.

As always, Rama did us proud, providing expertly cooked kebabs and sausages, accompanied by salad and coleslaw. He even ensured the rain kept off and we were able to enjoy a lovely, balmy evening outside.

February - a big thank you to our partners

Every so often, we like to say thank you to our wives and partners for their support throughout the year. Even though not Lions members (although they can join if they want, for some reason, they seem to prefer to get rid of their menfolk a couple of times a month!), our wives and partners play a very important role in many of our fund raising efforts, such as Santa's Sleigh, and initiatives to serve our community, such as tree planting, litter picking and stewarding at events.

In late February, the Lions took over the historic Great Hall at Southwell Minster to cook a special meal for our wives and partners. Salmon and cream cheese terrine with melba toast was followed by lamb steaks in a piquant sauce (or salmon with hollandaise sauce), accompanied by roast potatoes, red cabbage and a medley of other vegetables, finished off with a choice of trifles, cheesecakes or fruit salad. All this was rounded off by tea or coffee and home made mint chocolates.

The crack team of chefs, led by Ian 'Gordon R**ms*y' Robinson and Marco Pierre Murray, included Lions Roger Eastty, Nick Parr, Ian Gillings, Mike Broadley and Peter Brooker. The kitchen team was supported by many other Lions who helped with preparation, serving, washing up and clearing up. A huge thanks to everyone who took part and helped to make the evening a huge success.

January - darts and curry night

Around 20 members enjoyed a darts and curry night at The Reindeer Inn at our social meeting in January. Thanks for a great evening go to Bob Callow for organising the event, to Steve Scall for refereeing the darts tournament (even though he wasn't called on to declare one hundred and eighteeee!) and to Rama and Mila from The Reindeer for serving up a delicious curry with poppadums and naans.

Winners of a virtual prize were Roger Eastty and Peter Brooker, who showed that the fable of the hare and the tortoise is every bit as relevant today, by lulling the competition into sensing victory by scoring low to start with only to come through on the final throw of closest to the bull!
