Southwell Lions have traditionally held a social evening on the fourth Tuesday of every month. These take many forms. Sometimes we have a speaker - eg, to tell us about an expedition to one of the world's remotest places or about the training and work of assistance dogs. Or we might play a sport few of us have tried before. Or a wine tasting evening. Sometimes, it's just a social get-together in a local pub for fun, banter and a beer or two (or more). On occasion, we throw caution to the wind and meet up on an entirely different day!
In August 2021, on a bright, sunny Monday evening, we followed in the footsteps of the Euro finals with an energetic games of 'walking football' at Southwell Leisure Centre - who kindly lent us their outdoor seven-a-side pitch for the evening. Members who are - shall we say - beyond the first flush of youth, surprised themselves with their energy, skill and enthusiasm as they raced up and down the pitch, displaying their long-forgotten skills at the 'beautiful game'. And at full time, they even managed to emulate our national team with an even scoreline. No penalty shootout for the Lions, however. Discretion being the better part of valour (and to spare the blushes of our penalty shoot-out hopefuls), we instead repaired to the Reindeer Inn to discuss the finer points of our matchplay.
July 2021 - How well do you know Southwell?
For our July social event, we took to the streets of Southwell, specifically King Street and Queen Street, to test our powers of observation. Anyone walking through the town in the early evening of 27 July may well have been mystified by the sight of small groups of people wondering around, apparently aimlessly, staring at the buildings and looking puzzled. It wasn't lost tourists or burglars casing the joint but Southwell Lions enjoying a brain-teasing quiz to identify sights and features that we pass every day but never notice. Followed, as usual, by a convivial get-together in a local hostelry. Take a look at the photos below and see how many you can identify. Can you say where they are?
